Intro

Michael: Hi, everyone, I’m Michael.
Tina: And I’m Tina!
Michael: And welcome to Culture Class: Essential Bulgarian Vocabulary, Lesson 21! In this lesson you'll learn five essential words related to transportation and around town. These are five common modes of transportation in Bulgaria. Hand picked. You can find a complete list of vocabulary at BulgarianPod101.com.
BODY
Michael: Tina, what’s our first word?
Tina: автомобил
Michael: car
Tina: (slow) автомобил (regular) автомобил
Michael: Listeners, please repeat:
Tina: автомобил
[pause - 5 sec.]
Michael: Until recently, Bulgaria was not known as a car manufacturing country. Even today, it is a Chinese investor who is assembling cars in Bulgaria. However, the brand is not popular locally, and Bulgarians prefer other European or Japanese car brands.
Michael: Now let's hear a sample sentence using this word.
Tina: (normal) По време на комунистическия режим, на едно домакинство е било разрешено да притежава само една кола.
Michael: During the Communist regime, people were allowed to own only one car per household.
Tina: (slow) По време на комунистическия режим, на едно домакинство е било разрешено да притежава само една кола.
Michael: Okay, what’s the next word?
Tina: автобус
Michael: bus
Tina: (slow) автобус (regular) автобус
Michael: Listeners, please repeat:
Tina: автобус
[pause - 5 sec.]
Michael: The autobus is the most common public intra- or inter-city transportation means in Bulgaria. Even if they only come at rare intervals or only on specific days of the week, buses run to almost every settlement in the country. When the route is not a popular one, mini-buses are often used instead.
Michael: Now let's hear a sample sentence using this word.
Tina: (normal) Градските автобуси в България често са без климатик.
Michael: There is often no air-conditioner in the inner-city buses in Bulgaria.
Tina: (slow) Градските автобуси в България често са без климатик.
Michael: Okay, what’s the next word?
Tina: трамвай
Michael: tram
Tina: (slow) трамвай (regular) трамвай
Michael: Listeners, please repeat:
Tina: трамвай
[pause - 5 sec.]
Michael: Trams are one of the symbols of the capital city of Bulgaria, as there are trams only in Sofia. Currently 23 tram lines intersect the city, with some of them connecting districts that are quite distant.
Michael: Now let's hear a sample sentence using this word.
Tina: (normal) Конските омнибуси в София са били наричани "трамваи" преди да се появят истинските електрически трамваи.
Michael: The horse omni-buses in Sofia used to be called "trams" before the real electrical trams appeared.
Tina: (slow) Конските омнибуси в София са били наричани "трамваи" преди да се появят истинските електрически трамваи.
Michael: Okay, what’s the next word?
Tina: тролейбус
Michael: trolleybus
Tina: (slow) тролейбус (regular) тролейбус
Michael: Listeners, please repeat:
Tina: тролейбус
[pause - 5 sec.]
Michael: The trolley buses might be regarded as an environmentally friendly means of transportation, as they use electricity to run. They are quite popular in the capital and some of the other major cities in Bulgaria.

Tina: (normal) Планира се линиите на тролейбусите в София да достигнат 20 до 2020 г.

Tina: влак
Michael: train
Tina: (slow) влак (regular) влак
Michael: Listeners, please repeat:
Tina: влак
[pause - 5 sec.]
Michael: The trains used to be the most convenient and cheapest inter-city transport in Bulgaria. In recent years though, they are getting neglected and outdated. More and more people prefer to use their own cars instead of public transportation.
