Jonathan: Top 25 Bulgarian Questions You Need to Know - Lesson 21: Are you hungry? in Bulgarian. In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll master a common question for Bulgarian learners, and then learn how to answer it like a native. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.

Jonathan: In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question "Are you hungry?" In Bulgarian this is
Iva: Гладен ли си?
Jonathan: The first word in the question is
Iva: гладен
Jonathan: meaning hungry in English.
Iva: (Slow, by syllable) гладен
Jonathan: Listen again and repeat.
Iva: гладен

Jonathan: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is

Jonathan: meaning whether.

Jonathan: Now repeat.

Jonathan: Yes, I'm a little hungry. Again, slowly. Repeat the phrase.

To say "no", in a simple way, just say
Iva: Не, не съм.
Jonathan: Which is like saying No, I'm not. in English. Let's hear it again.
Iva: Не, не съм.
Jonathan: Let's break it down from the beginning. The first word
Iva: да
Jonathan: means yes.
Iva: (Slow, by syllable) да
Jonathan: Now repeat
Iva: да

Jonathan: meaning a little.
Iva: (Slow, by syllable) малко

★ Note that this is how you say “I’m a little hungry” if you are a male person. If you are female person, you would say:

Jonathan: To use a different phrase, replace a little hungry with starving.
Iva: умирам от глад
Jonathan: starving
Iva: (slow) умирам от глад (regular) умирам от глад
Jonathan: Listen to the phrase again, this time with starving
Iva: Да, умирам от глад.
Jonathan: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace a little hungry. Say Yes, I'm starving.

Jonathan: Note that this is how both males and females would say this phrase.
Jonathan: To expand on the pattern, now replace starving with very hungry.
Iva: много съм гладен
Jonathan: very hungry

Jonathan: Listen to the phrase again, this time with very hungry
Iva: Да, много съм гладен.
Jonathan: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace the word for starving. Say Yes, I'm very hungry.

Jonathan: Now you want to say Yes, I'm starving. Respond to the question.

Jonathan: You want to say Yes, I'm very hungry.. . Answer the speaker's question.
Iva: Гладен ли си? (five seconds) Да, много съм гладен. (male) [Да, много съм гладна.] (female)
Jonathan: You want to say Yes, I'm hungry.. Respond to the question.

Jonathan: You want to ask someone if they are hungry. Ask the question
