Здрасти, аз се казвам Ива. Hi everybody! I’m Iva.
Welcome to BulgarianPod101.com’s “Български в три минути”. The fastest, easiest, and most fun way to learn Bulgarian.
In the last lesson, we learned the numbers from one to ten. Have you forgotten? Here, I'll tell you again:
Едно, две, три, четири, пет, шест, седем, осем, девет, десет!!
[C screen-ws]
And now let’s continue from eleven.
Единадесет.
[slowly] единадесет.
Дванадесет.
[slowly] дванадесет.
Тринадесет.
[slowly] тринадесет.
Четиринадесет.
[slowly] четиринадесет.
Петнадесет.
[slowly] петнадесет.
Шестнадесет.
[slowly] шестнадесет.
Седемнадесет.
[slowly] седемнадесет.
Осемнадесет.
[slowly] Осемнадесет.
Деветнадесет.
[slowly] деветнадесет.
And finally we have:
Двадесет
[slowly] двадесет.
Okay, now repeat after me. I'll say the numbers and give you time to repeat each one.
11. единадесет
12. дванадесет
13. тринадесет
14. четиринадесет
15. петнадесет
16. шестнадесет
17. седемнадесет
18. осемнадесет
19. деветнадесет
20. двадесет
These numbers may seem harder to remember, but you really just have to remember that each one ends in десет which means “ten”, as you already know.
Let’s not stop at 20! Counting from ten to one hundred is super easy! Now I'll give you the tens-
тридесет
четиридесет
петдесет
шестдесет
седемдесет
осемдесет
деветдесет
сто
While you have to memorize a few of these numbers, there are a couple of tricks that will make memorizing them incredibly easy! Notice that the numbers from 13 to 19 start with the numbers from 3 to 9, три, четири, пет, шест, седем, осем and девет. Do you remember them from our previous lesson? Then after them, we add the word на and then десет! So altogether "thirteen" is three plus на plus ten, десет. Or тринадесет.
[slowly] Тринадесет.
And the numbers from 20 to 100 are even easier. Again, we form them by simply adding the word for ten, десет. So четиридесет means “four-ten”, just the intonation changes from simply saying four and then ten. Четиридесет.
[slowly] Четиридесет.
Twelve and twenty are also similar. We don’t say the basic number two, две, but два, which is its masculine form. So “twelve” is дванадесет.
[slowly] Дванадесет.
And “twenty” is двадесет
[slowly] Двадесет.
The same thing happens to the number eleven! Instead of the simple number one, едно, we say the masculine form един, and we have единадесет.
[slowly] Единадесет.
Finally, we have the number one hundred, сто.
[slowly] Сто.
It’s an easy one, isn’t it?
How would you say “fifty-six” in Bulgarian? Let’s take it step-by-step. "Fifty" is петдесет, and then add "six", шест.
Петдесет и шест! Just add one и which means “and” and it’s done! Isn’t that easy?
Let’s make another number, for instance, "ninety-eight."
Take "ninety", деветдесет, and add "eight", осем, and don’t forget the и-
Деветдесет и осем!
And now it’s time for Iva’s Insights:
One last tricky part. In spoken language, Bulgarian people use “-йсе” or “-десе” instead of the word for ten, десет, when they pronounce the numbers from 11 to 90. For example,“единайсе” or “осемдесе" which are 11 and 80. It is easier to pronounce them this way, but the formal and written language require the full form.
So after only two lessons, you are now able to count to one hundred in Bulgarian!
In the next lesson we are going to put your number knowledge to use! Do you have all the skills you need to go shopping in Bulgaria? If not, I'll be waiting for you in our next Български в три минути lesson.
До скоро!
