Здрасти, аз съм Ива. Hi everybody! I’m Iva.
Welcome to BulgarianPod101.com’s “Български в три минути”. The fastest, easiest, and most fun way to learn Bulgarian.
In the last lesson, we learned how to use the verb правя which means "to do" in Bulgarian.
In this lesson, we will learn how to use обичам, the most romantic Bulgarian verb, which is also the third verb in our series dedicated to the most common Bulgarian verbs.
Обичам can mean both "to like" and "to love" in Bulgarian, so in this lesson we are going to see how to use it correctly. Let’s go! Да започваме!
Imagine you are in a restaurant with your partner and he or she asks you, Обичаш ли сирене?
This means "Do you like cheese?" in the informal form.
So supposing you like it, you can answer Да, обичам сирене.
[slowly] Да, обичам сирене.
So let’s break down this answer.
First we had -
Да which is simply "Yes."
Then we have обичам, which is the 1st person form of the verb обичам in the present tense.
Finally we had сирене -- which means “cheese” in Bulgarian and usually refers to the white Bulgarian cheese.
So altogether it is Да, обичам сирене.
Note that in Bulgarian we use the verb обичам to express both that we "love" or that we "just like" something or someone.
Even if you just appreciate something, you can use обичам. On the other hand, it is also the verb to use when talking about something you really love or about the person you are in love with.
In fact, we can use the verb обичам to express different levels of liking things, and this often depends on the word that comes with it. For example, if you add много after обичам and не before the verb as you already know from our previous lessons -- to say Не обичам много сирене -- it will mean that you like cheese, but not so much.
But be careful! To say that you really love or enjoy something or someone, you can add the same word много but before обичам, as in Много обичам този филм, which means "I really like this movie". Here it is stronger and means you like it very much.
And of course, обичам is above all the verb of love, so if you are talking to the person you fell in love with, you can tell him Обичам те, which is "I love you" in Bulgarian! Isn’t that romantic?
Now it’s time for Iva’s Insights.
In Bulgarian, you can use the verb харесвам which means "to like" when you want to express that you like or prefer something.
For example, you can hear someone expressing their musical taste like this - Харесвам джаз музика. This means "I like jazz music."
In this lesson, we learned how to use the verb обичам depending on the degree of your love.
Next time, we’ll learn another very useful verb, идвам.
Do you know what this Bulgarian verb means? I’ll be waiting for you in the next Български в три минути.
До скоро!
