Lesson Transcript

Здрасти, аз съм Ива. Hi everybody! I’m Iva.
Welcome to BulgarianPod101.com’s “Български в три минути”. The fastest, easiest, and most fun way to learn Bulgarian.
In the last lesson, we learned how to talk about nationality. This is the second part of our lesson on the verb съм, which means "to be".
This verb is also used to talk about location, to say things like "I am in the street" or "He is in the room", so it's very useful!
When you want to know where something or someone is, you use the verb съм in Bulgarian.
For example, when someone asks you on the phone Къде си? That means "Where are you?" in an informal way.
Let's break it down.
Къде means "Where"
Си is "are.” This is the verb “to be”, съм conjugated for ти.
And ти is the informal word for "you".
All together it is Къде си?
[slowly] Къде си?
Answering this question is very easy! You just say Аз съм + the place where you are.
Аз means “I” and
съм is again that verb “to be”, съм .
Then you add the place. So for example, you can say Аз съм на улицата which is "I am on the street"
[slowly] Аз съм на улицата.
Now let’s see a few other possible answers with I.
"I am at the office" would be Аз съм в офиса.
"I am in a meeting" would be Аз съм на среща.
"I am in a store" would be Аз съм в магазина.
Another useful expression with the verb съм is when you answer the phone. To introduce your name you can say your name + е.
So when I pick up the phone I often say Ива е. It is really simple—you just say your name + е, which means "It is".
This verb съм changes a lot depending on the pronoun it is pointing to and its tense. Let’s review a few of the versions we’ve seen so far.
сте - Откъде сте?
съм - Аз съм американец.
си - Къде си?
е - Ива е.
Now it’s time for Iva’s Insights.
You can use the verb съм in a convenient question for when you are lost on the street – Не знам къде съм, може ли да ми помогнете ако обичате?
That means “I don’t know where I am, can you help me please?”
(One more time, slowly- Не знам къде съм, може ли да ми помогнете ако обичате?)
In this lesson we learned how to talk about your location thanks to the verb съм. Next time, we’ll learn how to talk about ages using the same verb. So do you want to know how to ask somebody’s age? I’ll be waiting for you in the next Български в три минути.
До скоро!
