| On June 1, people in Bulgaria celebrate Child's Day, or as it’s sometimes called, Children’s Day. |
| In this lesson you’ll learn why and how Bulgarians celebrate “Children’s Day,” or in Bulgarian Denyat na deteto. |
| Now, before we get into more detail, I've got a question for you- |

| Children’s Day is celebrated in Bulgaria and in many other countries. However, it’s usually on different dates in different countries. In Bulgaria it began to be honored after 1949, when Moscow established June 1 as the International Day for the Protection of Children. |
| This day is celebrated by almost all countries from the former Socialist Bloc. The holiday originated from the World Conference on the Well-being of Children held in Geneva in 1925. Children’s Day is important because it reminds “adults,” or vazrastnite, about the necessity for “special protection,” or in Bulgarian spetsialna zashtita, of children’s rights. Children’s rights include the ideas of equality in “upbringing, “or vazpitanie in Bulgarian, education, social protection, and the physical and spiritual development of all children. |
| Children’s Day is celebrated with “plays,” or igri, and events with free admission for children, fairs and festivals, “concerts,” or kontserti, shows, and social activities. There are a lot of treats, balloons, and “smiles,” or in Bulgarian usmivki, for the children. |
| Often on Children’s Day there are competitions for children’s drawings or face-painting events for children. Thus children can spend some time in the shoes of their favorite “characters,” or lyubimi geroi, for a while and take pictures as “keepsakes,” or za spomen. |

| In 1954 the UN and UNESCO established November 20 as Universal Children’s Day. Despite this, the date has not been adopted everywhere, because most countries already have established traditions for honoring the holiday. |
