Hello, and welcome to the Culture Class- Holidays in Bulgaria Series at BulgarianPod101.com. In this series, we’re exploring the traditions behind Bulgarian holidays and observances. I’m Eric, and you're listening to Season 1, Lesson 14- International Women's Day.
Many countries have adopted the celebration of International Women’s Day, or in Bulgarian Mezhdunarodniya den na zhenata. It’s held on March 8. In Bulgaria this date is also celebrated as Women’s Day.
In this lesson you will learn more about the history of the women’s holiday and how it is honored in Bulgaria.
Now, before we get into more detail, I've got a question for you-
Do you know which flowers are most often given on March 8?
If you don't already know, you’ll find out a bit later, so keep listening!
Women’s Day originated as a day of recognition of the social role of women and their political and economic achievements. For this reason, this holiday is associated with the socialist movement, yet is still appreciated.
International Women’s Day is celebrated as a day when men show their gratitude, “respect,” or uvazhenie, and attention to women. Therefore it’s often considered to “overlap” with, or se pripokriva s, Mother’s Day. Some people think that this is the day to place an emphasis on the problems and rights of women and topics that are of interest to them.
In Bulgaria women receive flowers, or poluchavat tsvetya, from men on this day—for instance from their colleagues or from their husbands and children. There are no “limitations,” or nyama ogranicheniya, to whom one can give flowers to—it may be female colleagues, friends, mothers, or wives. On Women’s Day every town in Bulgaria is showered with flowers and the flower shops are really “busy,” or in Bulgarian zaeti.
On March 8, Bulgarian women also organize women-only parties—gatherings with colleagues or friends. Another “option,” or drug variant, for the holiday is that the special man in a woman’s life prepares a surprise for or pampers her.
Now it's time to answer our quiz question-
Do you know which flowers are most often given on March 8?
On March 8, the traditional flowers to give are carnations. However, they are sometimes considered too standard and for this reason “tulips,” or laleta, “hyacinths,” or zyumbyuli, freesias, and lilies-of-the-valley are preferred, while rose bouquets are considered the most special.
