Michael: And welcome to Culture Class: Essential Bulgarian Vocabulary, Lesson 12! In this lesson you'll learn five essential words related to geography and nature. Michael: The Karakachan dog is relatively big and usually has a black head and black and white fur. In the past, it was used as a guard dog. The breed is recognized by leading international organizations and recently became popular in the U.S.

Michael: The East Balkan pig is found in only two mountain regions in Eastern Bulgaria – the Stranzha and the East Balkan mountains. Usually this type of pig is bred in open air, whereas other types of pig are usually bred inside.

Michael: The Deliorman horse used to be raised only in the territory of Bulgaria and was in great demand in the Ottoman empire. For centuries, it was raised in herds, straying around and living freely in the open, thus fostering natural selection within the breed.
