Iva: Absolutely. Maybe they will even give you a tip on how to find your way to some of the other cultural treats that Bulgaria has to offer.

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Yura: Well, we have covered all the words, and now we will explain their usage.
Iva: But it’s going to be easy.
Yura: Because most of them have the same usage as in English.
Iva: With small exceptions such as извинете and съжалявам, which can be used as both “excuse me” and “I’m sorry”. But, again, its meaning is defined by its usage.
Yura: Could you say this one more time slowly?
Iva: извинете and съжалявам.
Yura: And one more time at natural speed.
Iva: извинете and съжалявам.
Yura: These are very useful expressions. With them and the other vocabulary words, we have equipped you with everything you need to resolve misunderstandings.
Iva: If you didn’t understand the word for the first time, you know the phrase for “Could you say it once again?”
Yura: Which is?
Iva: Ще го повторите ли?
Yura: Slowly.
Iva: Ще го повторите ли?
Yura: And one more time at normal speed.
Iva: Ще го повторите ли?
Yura: And if you still have problems understanding your companions, you know how to ask them to speak slower.
Iva: Говорете по-бавно. Говорете по-бавно. Говорете по-бавно.
Yura: And if you think the word is useful for you, you can ask someone to show you how to write the word or to help you with your Bulgarian writing.
Iva: Може ли да ми го напишете? Може ли да ми го напишете? Може ли да ми го напишете?
Yura: I used to carry a notebook. Once I had the word and its English equivalent, I will just open the book anytime I had a moment, on the bus, whenever, and studied the word.
Iva: Oh, that’s what I did too.
Yura: Once the word is somewhere in your brain, you just need to give yourself a chance to encounter it a few times in different circumstances.
Iva: Yes, this writing down letter is great, because once you introduce yourself to the word and write it down, you are giving yourself a chance to hear it again, and use it again.
Yura: And it only takes a few times.
Iva: Soon, you will have the vocabulary of a native Bulgarian speaker.

Lesson focus

Iva: Now, let’s take a look at this lesson's grammar point. The first phrase we have is Извинете, как казвате _____ на български?
Yura: “Excuse me, how do we say… in Bulgarian.” The first word is Извинете, which means “excuse me” if you put it at the beginning of the question sentence. In the third sentence, the meaning changes to “I’m sorry”, so you should use, Съжалявам instead.
Iva: So the first phrase we have expresses the request for help, therefore we use Извинете, which means “excuse me”.
Yura: The next word is как, which means “how”.
Iva: We have mentioned this word before in the first Basic Bootcamp lesson. In the phrase Как се казваш?, “What’s your name?” remember?
Yura: Oh, that’s right. Well, the good news is that this word hasn’t changed its meaning since. And it never will.
Iva: Easy. как
Yura: Okay. And the next word we have is?
Iva: казвате, казвате, казвате
Yura: Means “to say”, so where we have как казвате which literally means “how do you say” and then just add the word you want to know, followed by…
Iva: на български, на български, на български
Yura: We can translate this as “in Bulgarian”, and it refers to the language in our case. All you need here is hope that your companion speaks English well enough to understand and say it in Bulgarian for you.
Iva: So, in the dialogue, we heard Извинете, как казвате “cheese” на български?
Yura: Right. How would we use the same phrase but change “cheese” for “ticket”?
Iva: Извинете, как казвате “ticket” на български?
Yura: Great. Listeners, listen and repeat.
Iva: Извинете, как казвате “ticket” на български?
Yura: Here we go. Okay. let’s move to the second phrase.
Iva: Съжалявам, не разбрах. Ще го повторите ли?
Yura: First we have the expression for “I am sorry”. And then comes не, which is like the English word “not” and it makes the sentence negative.
Iva: That’s right. And our next word is clear evidence of that разбирам, разбирам, разбирам.
Yura: разбирам literally means “understand”. And the next word is?
Iva: Ще, Ще, Ще
Yura: Ще means “will you”, and it is used for both formal speech and when expressing plural, just like English.
Iva: Next is го which literally translates as “it” which is followed by the word for “repeat” повторите.
Yura: So, literally, we are saying “can you do it repeat”. Great. Let’s repeat the whole phrase again. Listeners, listen carefully and repeat.
Iva: Съжалявам, не разбрах. Ще го повторите ли?
Yura: Let’s move to the sentence number three.
Iva: Моля, говорете по-бавно.
Yura: Моля is the word for “please” and the next word is…
Iva: говорете, говорете, говорете
Yura: It means “you speak”. And in other to not sound rude, we put Моля before it “please speak”.
Iva: The next particle is по, по. This literally means “more” followed by -бавно, -бавно, -бавно.
Yura: Which together means “slower”. In case you wonder how to say “slower” in Bulgarian it is…
Iva: бавен, бавен, бавен
Yura: So, for по-бавно is a comparative adjective and means “slower”. Let’s say phrase one again. Listeners, pay close attention and repeat.
Iva: Моля, говорете по-бавно.
Yura: And finally the last phrase for this lesson.
Iva: Може ли да ми го напишете на български?
Yura: “Write this down in Bulgarian for me, please.” We start with the question Може or “can you”.
Iva: Може, Може, Може
Yura: Followed by saying to whom you wanted it written, which in this case is “for me”.
Iva: да ми го
Yura: As we learnt earlier, го means “it”. And as we want to say that we want something written down for me, we add “ми”, so this will translate as ‘to me’. Let’s hear it again.
Iva: да ми го
Yura: Next we have напишете, which literally means “write”.
Iva: напишете, напишете, напишете
Yura: Finally, we have на български means “in Bulgarian”.
Iva: на български, на български, на български
Yura: Listeners, listen to the whole phrase again and repeat out loud.
Iva: Може ли да ми го напишете на български?

Outro

Yura: Very easy and useful. Well, that was it for this lesson. Thanks for listening.
Iva: See you. Ciao!
